Description

Hops
The female inflorescences of Humulus lupulus (hops) have long been used in traditional medicine mainly for the treatment of sleep disorders, but are also indicated in neuralgia, in states of agitation associated with nervous tension. It seems that the sedative activity is mainly due to É‘-acid, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol: the mechanism of action foresees the increase of the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA through the modulation of GABA (A) receptors in the brain.

Lemon balm
The extract is known to have actions on the central nervous system of a sedative, anxiolytic and sleep-promoting type; it may also have pain-relieving action. Recently it has been shown that some flavonoids contained in the extract may have similar activity to that of benzodiazepines. It has a valid antispasmodic action on the smooth muscle of the intestine, which is due to the essential oil and partly also to the flavonoids, especially those containing apigenin, which seems due to an action to reduce the penetration of calcium into the muscle cells of the intestinal wall, which reduces its contraction.
